The Governor's Office for Substance Abuse Prevention is pleased to act as a clearinghouse for the prevention-related funding sources of which we are aware. "Funding Announcements" lists, in order of deadline date, pending grant opportunities. "Funding Resources" lists links to sites to help you find and apply for grants.

Funding Announcements -
- Community Coalition Grant
The Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) is offering grants up to $10,000 through the Community Coalition Grant. This grant program annually supports collaboration between local businesses, community organizations and state agencies. Virginia's local and state agencies, police departments, schools and 501C(3) non-profit community organizations are eligible to apply. Applicants are encouraged to involve their local ABC special agents, local law enforcement officers, local attorneys, judges, educators, licensees, state agencies, medical personnel and service organizations.
Applications must be submitted by 5 p.m. on Friday, June 6, 2008. All grants will be awarded by July 11, 2008. The grant cycle runs from July 2008 through May 2009.
- Strengthening Youth Mentoring through Community Partnerships
The U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Justice Programs, Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, is pleased to announce that it is seeking applications for funding Strengthening Youth Mentoring through Community Partnerships. This program furthers the Department’s mission by providing grants, cooperative agreements, and other assistance authorized by the Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Act of 2002.
Applicants are limited to units or sub-units of local government, and federally recognized tribal governments. OJJDP will only accept applications that demonstrate the applicant has entered into a partnership with one or more private entities to form a “community partnership.” Eligible community partnerships must include at a minimum: 1) a nonfederal unit or subunit of government, such as a county, city or township government or a federally recognized tribal government and 2) one or more private organizations, such as nonprofits, for-profits, community-based and faith-based organizations. Applications that do not demonstrate that they have met the minimum eligibility to be considered a “community partnership” will be deemed ineligible for funding.
Applicants should propose initiatives that will increase local communities’ capacity to develop and implement mentoring programs and provide mentoring services, particularly to populations of at-risk youth who are underserved due to location, shortage of mentors, special physical or mental challenges, or other situations identified by the community in need of mentoring services.
Applications must be submitted by 8:00 p.m. EDT, June 20, 2008.
- FY2008 Discretionary Grants for the Family Violence Prevention and Services Program
The Department of Health & Human Services, Administration for Children and Families, Family and Youth Services Bureau, announces a proposal to provide financial support for the development of family violence intervention services and prevention efforts that are consistent with the Family Violence Prevention and Services Act (42 USC 10401 et. seq.).
The purpose of these grants is to support culturally competent approaches to the elimination of violence against women. Awards will be made for a 12-month budget period, with a maximum of three budget periods. The average projected award amount is $425,000 per budget period.
Letters of Intent are due by June 30, 2008; applications must be submitted by 4:30 p.m. EDT, July 14, 2008.
- Y St. Mini-grants
Y Street is a statewide association of high school youth advocates, who are working hard to educate and enlighten their peers as to the consequences of tobacco use. Y Street strives to cause cultural change in Virginia’s youth by deglamorizing tobacco and instilling pride in a smoke-free lifestyle.
Y Street is offering twelve $2,000 Mini-Grants to local student organizations to encourage active and engaged youth to become a part of Y Street’s mission.
The applications are due by July 31, 2008.

- National Center for Mental Health Promotion & Youth Violence Prevention
The National Center for Mental Health Promotion & Youth Violence Prevention serves grantees of the Safe Schools/Healthy Students Program. The Center's expertise is enhanced by a valuable group of partner organizations with expertise in promoting mental health and preventing violence and substance abuse as well as in important issues such as cultural competence and human development.
